Practical notes

Shipping, care and returns.

The questions that come up most often. If yours is not here, write to studio@silkwire.com and we will answer within two working days.

Shipping

Where do you ship from, and how long does it take?

Pieces are made and shipped from Nanjing, China. In-stock pieces leave the studio in 2 to 4 days; made-to-order pieces take the lead time shown on the product page. Delivery is by tracked and insured courier, usually 7 to 15 business days to the US, UK and EU, longer during holiday periods.

Do you ship worldwide?

We ship to most countries. If checkout later refuses your country, write to the studio and we will quote a courier.

Can I track the parcel?

Yes. A tracking number is sent when the parcel leaves the studio. If tracking has not updated for five days, write to us and we will chase the courier.

Duties and taxes

Are duties and VAT included?

Not by default. Import duty and VAT are set by your country and are usually collected by the courier before delivery. Orders are declared at the price paid; we do not mark parcels as gifts. Where a delivered-duty option is available for your country, it is shown before payment.

Why does this matter more than it used to?

Several low-value import exemptions have been removed or are being removed, in the US and the EU. Small parcels that used to arrive without charges may now attract duty and VAT. Please budget for this when comparing prices with marketplaces that pre-pay it.

Will I be charged for a refused parcel?

If a parcel is refused at customs and returned to us, we refund the piece but not the original shipping. If it is abandoned, we cannot refund it.

Caring for silk

How do I store a piece?

Flat, in its box, away from damp and direct sun. Do not hang a hairpin by the flower. Copper wire keeps its shape; silk will hold a fold if it is crushed.

Can I clean it?

Dust with a soft dry brush. Do not wash, steam or use cleaning products. Perfume, hairspray and sunscreen will dull the silk and cannot always be removed, so apply them before the piece goes on.

What if a petal is crushed?

In most cases it can be opened and re-shaped by hand. Send a photo and we will talk you through it, or repair it in the studio if you send it back.

Sizing and wear

How do I know a pin will hold?

Pins need hair to pass through. A 12 cm pin is enough for most buns; fine hair holds better with a comb. Each product page gives the length and the weight.

Are the flowers heavy?

No. A hairpin is around 7 to 9 g, a brooch around 8 to 11 g, and a bridal crown around 46 g. Weight is listed on every page.

Can I wear one with everyday clothes?

Yes. Small pieces work on a coat lapel, a bag strap or in a low bun. The journal has a guide to wearing a Chinese hairpin with modern clothes.

Orders, commissions and repairs

How do I place an order?

Open any piece and press Add to cart. That takes you to our secure WooCommerce checkout on wp.fuyitrade.com, where you can pay by card or PayPal and choose shipping. Made-to-order pieces show their lead time on the product page; commissions are quoted by email.

Can you make something that is not in the shop?

Usually. Bridal crowns, specific flowers and colour matching are all possible. Send reference images, the date you need it and your country, and we will reply with feasibility, price and lead time.

What is the return policy?

In-stock pieces can be returned within 14 days of delivery, unworn and in the original box. Made-to-order and commissioned pieces are final sale, because they are made for you. If a piece arrives damaged, send a photo within 48 hours and we will repair or replace it.

Do you repair pieces bought elsewhere?

If it is real silk over wire, often yes. Send photographs and we will say honestly whether it is worth the shipping.

Materials and authenticity

Is everything real silk?

The petals are dyed mulberry silk floss. Findings (pins, combs, brooch backs) are brass, boxwood or steel and are listed on each product page. If a piece ever uses a synthetic fibre, it will be labelled rayon or polyester, not silk.

Do you use feathers?

No. Diancui, the old technique of setting kingfisher feathers, is not part of what we make. Nothing in the shop uses bird feathers.

Is the heritage claim verified?

The craft is listed as Jiangsu provincial intangible cultural heritage (2007). We describe it as provincial, not national, because that is what the listing says.
